Muhammad T. Al-Lozi, MD

Master clinician, an often overused term, should only be used to denote an extraordinary clinician who comes along once in a generation. Muhammad T. Al-Lozi, MD, fits that definition. “Mo,” as he is known by his colleagues and friends, possesses an amazing ability to explain extremely difficult concepts in a manner understandable across audiences. Experts in medical education often emphasize that the best educators are rarely the best clinicians. Al-Lozi is an exception to this rule. His use of the Socratic method, paired with his tact, demeanor and encyclopedic knowledge of neurologic disease have rendered him an invaluable pillar of his department’s educational and clinical mission for 35 years. There is a longstanding rule of thumb that when all else fails with a medical mystery one should “consult Dr. Al-Lozi.” A five-time recipient of the Sven Eliasson Award for Teaching Excellence, he served as program director for the Electrophysiology and Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship for 23 years. His dedication, work ethic and passion for teaching and mentoring future generations of neuromuscular neurologists have resulted in the department’s program reputation as one of the most prestigious of its kind. More than 90 fellows have benefited from his mentorship, many of whom have gone on to practice neuromuscular medicine across the globe and at WashU Medicine.
