Designed with emerging leaders in mind, our Leadership Essentials Series offers valuable learning experiences for early career faculty just beginning their leadership journey.

Providing Effective Feedback:
Leadership Strategies for Growth and Development

Effective feedback is a cornerstone of successful leadership and a vital tool for fostering growth, improving performance, and building trust in academic environments. This interactive workshop is designed to help faculty leaders master the art of giving constructive, actionable, and supportive feedback. Participants will explore frameworks for delivering feedback, learn strategies to navigate challenging feedback conversations, and practice techniques for tailoring feedback to different contexts and individuals. Designed for leaders, this workshop will enhance your ability to promote accountability, encourage continuous improvement, and strengthen relationships within their teams.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role and impact of effective feedback in leadership, team development, and organizational culture.
  • Differentiate between types of feedback (e.g., positive, constructive, developmental) and determine when each is appropriate.
  • Apply structured feedback frameworks, such as IDEA (Identify-Describe-Encourage-Action) or DESC (Describe-Express-Specify-Consequences), to deliver clear and actionable messages.
  • Navigate challenging feedback conversations with professionalism, empathy, and confidence.
  • Tailor feedback approaches to address diverse communication styles, cultural contexts, and individual needs.

This workshop is designed for faculty members in leadership roles who aim to enhance their feedback delivery skills to build stronger teams, improve performance, and create a positive workplace culture.

Led by Steve Taff, PhD, OTR/L, FNAP, FAOTA, Assistant Dean for Faculty Leadership Development, and John Schneider, MD, MA, Assistant Dean for Coaching.
