The WashU Medicine Faculty Coaching Certification Programs offer intensive training experiences for Associate Professors and Full Professor above that equips faculty with skills to support colleagues’ professional development and well-being. Participants will learn practical techniques to facilitate growth across academic medicine’s key domains.

Two pathways, the Peer Coaching and Faculty Coaching Certification Programs, are designed to equip academic medical faculty with peer and advanced coaching skills to support their peers’ professional development and well-being via two or five-day training sessions.

Through interactive workshops, guided practice sessions, case studies, and personalized feedback, participants will build confidence in their coaching abilities while fostering a supportive community of practice. Upon completion, certified peer and faculty coaches will be equipped to provide structured coaching relationships that enhance faculty satisfaction, performance, and retention across the institution.

Program Descriptions

In both programs, participants will develop a robust coaching framework and practical techniques to facilitate meaningful growth in areas such as career advancement, teaching excellence, research productivity, clinical practice improvement, work-life integration, and resilience.

Peer Coaching Certification Program

A two-day workshop that teaches coaching skills with the intent for faculty to act as voluntary peer coaches on demand for other faculty.

Required Sessions:

  • Sept. 16, 2025 – Coaching Concepts
  • Nov. 11, 2025 – Questioning as a Coach

Prerequisites: Associate Professors and Full Professor.

Faculty Coaching Certification Program

A five-day training course where faculty are certified as Wash U Med Coaches. These coaches will be expected to offer two (2) hours per month in coaching time for faculty through a program run through the Office of Faculty Promotions and Career Development (OFPCD).

Faculty Coaches will be supported with funding for ongoing coaching education.

  • Sept. 16, 2025 – Coaching Concepts
  • Nov. 11, 2025 – Questioning as a Coach
  • Jan. 13, 2026 – Coaching Methods & Assessment Strategies
  • March 3, 2026 – Group Coaching Skills
  • May 12, 2026 – Advanced Topics in Coaching

Prerequisites – Associate Professors and Full Professors. Successful completion of Wash U Med Peer Coaching Certificate (Sept. 16 & Nov. 11, 2025)*

Interested cohort participants must complete/provide:
  • Application Survey: Peer Coaching Certification or Faculty Coaching Certification.
  • 1-page Chair Letter of Support committing to dedicated time and release to attend the program session days.
  • If applying to the Faculty Coaching Certification Program, both the applicant and their chair must commit to the required post-program peer coaching sessions (2 hours per month) for two (2) years. This commitment should be included in the Chair Letter of Support.
