Dr. Vijayan has been a faculty member at WUSM for 15 years while raising 2 children who are currently 15 and 13.  She employed a full-time nanny until her kids were able to attend pre-school.  Her husband is a non-physician who works as a consultant with flexible job hours.  Dr. Vijayan and her husband have maintained work-life balance by sharing household and childcare responsibilities, prioritizing family dinner, and compartmentalizing work and home lives.  Her mother-in-law, who has Alzheimer’s, lives with the family and requires a care-taker during the day.   Dr. Vijayan is actively involved in her children’s school and other extra-curricular activities and volunteers with the Lupus Foundation, National Kidney Foundation and SAWERAA (South Asian Women Empowerment Regional Association).
