Mario Castro, M.D., MPH

Dr. Castro has been a faculty member at WUSM for 19 years while raising 3 children.  2 of his 3 children were born here in St. Louis after completing his fellowship. Balancing his home life and starting an academic career on the investigator track was difficult and required creativity and a good support system. He participated in his children’s’ sports teams, scouts (was even the CubMaster), and used email to stay connected to teachers and coaches.  His wife was able to stay home with the children and then he was able to provide more quality time with his children in the evenings and weekends.  He believes it has been important to integrate his Hispanic culture into his family life as a way to stay engaged.
