2025 Dean’s Impact Award Recipient

Mwiza Ushe, MD, MA, is the lifeblood of community and belonging within the Department of Neurology and greater St. Louis region and helps to ensure that all populations have access to care. Ushe can often be found representing WashU at local events for the American Parkinson Disease Association, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Huntington’s Disease Society and many other organizations, where he pursues his ongoing mission to expand healthcare access and equity by building community relationships. Ushe’s clinical work is a continuation of this mission, through his patient-based approach to treating advanced movement disorders and the expansion of WashU’s neurological care footprint to minoritized populations in north St. Louis. Ushe inspires future medical professionals to follow in his footsteps through his active involvement in clinical mentorship, outreach programs like Camp Neuro for high school students and Neurology’s Groff Diversity Scholars program, which provides funding and mentorship to medical students from groups underrepresented in medicine. Ushe serves a critical role in Neurology as vice chair of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, while also holding key positions outside the university as vice president of the Society of Black Neurologists and vice chair of the American Neurological Association’s Inclusion/Diversity/Equity/Anti-Racism/Social Justice (IDEAS) Committee. Ushe passionately advocates for the health and wellness of his patients, colleagues and larger community.
