Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Promotions & Career Development

My overarching goal is simple: I want my office to support each of you – at every career stage – to achieve your full professional potential while advancing our shared mission of excellence and impact.

Renée Shellhaas, MD, MS

Whether you’re navigating early career decisions, seeking leadership development, or planning your next chapter, my office and our dedicated team are here to ensure you have access to tailored resources and support.

Since my arrival at WashU Medicine in 2022, my focus has been on creating systems and programs that truly serve you – our faculty. Together, we’ve accomplished a lot in the last few years; this work contributes to the deep foundations of excellence that set WashU Medicine apart and prepares us for the future.

Our guiding principles and achievements include:
  • Faculty deserve promotion criteria that reflect the full spectrum of your contributions. To support your varied career paths, we comprehensively revised our APGAR (Appointment & Promotions Guidelines and Recommendations).
  • As faculty, you require dedicated support throughout the career journey. To provide this necessary support, we launched our Office of Faculty Promotions & Career Development to provide leadership and professional development programs – no matter where you are in your career trajectory.
  • Everyone at WashU Medicine needs systems that better support an environment where we can do our best work. With the Executive Faculty Task Forces on Climate & Culture, we collaborated with learners, staff, and faculty to develop and implement two dozen recommendations to improve those foundational structures. For example, to equip leaders with critical skills, we developed and launched our Leading for Trust & Psychological Safety workshops and the Pivotal Leaders Program.

I encourage you to engage with us—pick a webinar, book discussion, workshop or program that meets a current need or stretches you to develop a new skill! My team is here for you, and we are committed to ensuring that WashU Medicine is a place where your career flourishes and you reach your full potential.

Elevating faculty. Amplifying impact. Transforming medicine.
