2024 Dean’s Impact Award Recipient

Christina L. Stallings, PhD, acts as an outstanding mentor and sponsor for a total of 46 trainees in her own laboratory — including those currently in training. This diverse group of trainees includes undergraduates, post-baccalaureates, PhD, MD/PhD, postdoctoral fellows and senior scientists. Approximately 20 additional summer students and high school students have also worked in Stallings’ group and have similarly benefitted from her mentorship and sponsorship. There is abundant evidence of her excellence in this area including the distinctions achieved by her trainees while active in her laboratory and their career paths since. The overwhelming majority of her trainees have been recognized for their accomplishments at the department, institutional or national level. These mentorship, leadership and advocacy activities are aimed squarely at ensuring that every student, regardless of experience or research background, can succeed. Her mentorship extends far beyond those in her own group. Stallings serves as a mentor and advisor to other faculty both in and outside WashU Medicine. These mentoring activities include her continuous service on the New Investigator Awards Committee and her service as a mentor in the Compass training and mentoring program. At the national and international levels, Stallings has served as a mentor for the American Society for Microbiology-National Institutes of Health MOSAIC program.
