Tammie L.S. Benzinger, MD, PhD, is a respected world leader in neuroimaging of aging and dementia and is well-known for her long-standing mentorship and sponsorship of both clinical and research trainees and faculty inside radiology, in collaborating departments across Washington University, and to women in science and medicine more broadly. Integral to all of Benzinger’s endeavors has been supporting and nurturing early career researchers and clinicians, including a myriad of undergraduate, graduate and medical students and residents across radiology, neurology, neurosurgery and radiation oncology. She has made a sustained significant contribution to the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology residency, where she has served as an official mentor for over 15 years. She is currently mentoring three graduate students, three postdoctoral research fellows, two postgraduate clinical research residents and fellows, one postgraduate clinical trainee and five faculty and is a formal mentor on a number of NIH-funded training grants for both basic scientists and clinician scientists. Her leadership style promotes collaborators, particularly students and junior faculty, which enables their success, and her strong mentorship and sponsorship of medical students, trainees and junior faculty across multiple specialties set her apart.
