Through her role as faculty and division chief in pediatric emergency medicine, Kimberly S. Quayle, MD, has mentored fellows and junior faculty in the specialty for 30 years. Through support of their academic interests, she has helped facilitate the career development of accomplished pediatric emergency physicians now working across the country in many leadership roles. The accomplishments of past mentees encompass successful careers in clinical, research, educational and advocacy endeavors, including the roles of pediatric residency program director, PEM fellowship program director, chief physician executive of an academic children’s hospital, founder and CMO of a virtual health care company, and leaders at the program level in point-of-care ultrasound, EMS, disaster preparedness, simulation, quality improvement, trauma and injury prevention. Quayle has also helped foster the careers of faculty in research endeavors, leading to their successes in publication and funding. An authority in pediatric emergency medicine, she received WashU Medicine’s Faculty Achievement Award in 2019. She is noted for her applications of cutting-edge emergency care and was the site principal investigator in the PECARN Head Trauma Study, which collected and analyzed data on 40,000 patients to inform a new standard of care for children with minor head injuries.
