Andrew R. Lee, MD, has made extensive contributions to the WashU Medicine community as an outstanding mentor. Since 2019, he has thrived in the role of director of medical student education for ophthalmology, working with nearly every student rotating through the department or applying for its residency. During his time in the position, the number of students applying to ophthalmology has increased significantly, with seven students matching into ophthalmology in 2022. One student described Lee as “a natural mentor who demonstrates patience and enthusiasm while interacting with students” and “a true advocate for student learning in the Department of Ophthalmology.” For his efforts with medical students, Lee was awarded the Distinguished Service and Teaching Award for Clinical Care – Medical Team and the Academy of Educators Rising Star Award in 2022. Lee has also served as a mentor for many students conducting research in the field of pediatric ophthalmology and was recognized by the residents with the Ophthalmology Clinical Teacher of the Year award in 2022.
