Douglas M. Char, MD, is an exceptional mentor with a long record of supporting the academic success of his mentees. In his role as the founding program director of the department’s residency program, he has mentored and sponsored over 160 residents over 15 years. Char has dedicated one-on-one meetings to help trainees hone in on specific goals, identify gaps in knowledge and experience, map out individual development plans and specify tasks needed to complete these plans. In addition, Char has been an advocate and sponsor, identifying and providing opportunities for trainees to pursue and obtain. Examples of these efforts include the success of his mentees in obtaining multiple academic and clinical leadership roles. Char has also demonstrated a tireless dedication to implementing professional development of others through curricular development, teaching and scholarship. Examples that highlight the impact of his mentorship include his roles as Gateway Curriculum course leader, medical student faculty supervisor for the Saturday Neighborhood Health Clinic (SNHC), director of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Allyship and Social Justice (IDEAS) course, and faculty preceptor for the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA). Through these efforts, and many others, his approach of structured and constructive feedback and actionable advice have positively impacted the professional development of numerous individuals. Beyond these roles, he serves as vice chair of faculty affairs, overseeing emergency medicine faculty promotions and development.
