Collaborative. Devoted. Creative. Supportive. These are just a few of the descriptors colleagues and current trainees use when speaking about Eric C. Leuthardt, MD. Despite a busy schedule as a neurosurgeon, scientist, inventor, author and entrepreneur, Leuthardt’s commitment to guiding the burgeoning careers of WashU Medicine students has never wavered. In the operating room, he is known for coaching neurosurgery residents to become the very best technical surgeons, while also aiding them in the development of their research projects. In the lab, Leuthardt seeks to create a welcoming and collaborative environment with feedback that is constructive rather than just critical. As director of the Center for Innovation in Neuroscience and Technology, he encourages students to engage with a network of multidisciplinary mentors to understand the necessary steps and pitfalls required to bring an idea from academia to market (i.e., intellectual property, licensing, conflicts of interest, venture capital financing). He has and continues to demonstrate a tremendous commitment to being an excellent mentor and fulfills WashU Medicine’s mission of delivering outstanding health care, conducting innovative research and educating tomorrow’s leaders in biomedicine. He does all that he can to help his students have the freedom and flexibility to perform work that is meaningful, impactful and exciting to them.
