2024 Dean’s Impact Award Recipient

Erin R. Foster, PhD, OTD, OTR/L, has shown exceptional dedication to developing students in her 20+ years at WashU Medicine. Through her Cognitive and Occupational Performance Laboratory, she has guided research projects for more than 40 master’s degree (MSOT) and 22 clinical doctorate (OTD) students. An impressive 23 of those projects resulted in a published manuscript or abstract, seven of which were recognized by occupational therapy faculty with Occupational Therapy Research Excellence Awards. Appointed director of the Rehabilitation and Participation Science PhD program in 2022, Foster has worked hard to prepare scientists who will contribute to the critical evidence base that underpins occupational therapy education and practice. Foster’s patience and mentorship have also created an uplifting, fulfilling and growth-oriented working environment for staff, who call her “an active listener who is respectful and attentive” and someone who “provides detailed feedback or solutions which are very constructive.” Members of her lab staff unanimously agree that they are proud to be a part of her lab, both for its community engagement and its overall contributions to addressing health conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. Her mentorship commitment and style are truly remarkable and serve as an inspiration to all.
